The Green Lions had a night to forget at Footes Lane yesterday.

Sam Merson, the son of former England international Paul, helped himself to four goals as Hanworth Villa eased to a 5-0 win over Guernsey FC in Isthmian South Central and even Tony Vance found it hard to take any positives out of his side’s performance.

The GFC manager admitted that he wants to get through this week as quickly as possible with the Muratti semi-final in Alderney on Saturday spreading his resources thin and the home side were fielding a patched up side against the ‘Villains’, but that could not be used an excuse for the manner of the defeat, which he understandably wanted to put a line through as quickly as possible.

Hanworth and Merson were given a helping hand by a massive deflection that left unlucky GFC goalkeeper Christan Povall helpless as they took the lead in just the second minute.

It looked as if GFC would get into the half-time interval trailing by that single goal, but Merson struck twice in 90 seconds in the dying moments of the first half to put the Villains in control.

Sam Mead added the fourth just after the hour mark before Merson fittingly had the final word as he completed the rout 10 minutes from the end.
