Or rather substitute Ethan Gold struck the 95th-minute winner for the ‘Moles’ with virtually the last kick of the game, which was a sickening blow for Guernsey FC who have yet to pick up a point at home in Isthmian South Central this season.
However, Tony Vance was in no mood to make excuses after the 2-1 defeat.
‘It’s a poor loss from our point of view,’ said the Green Lions manager.
‘With five minutes to go, I just shouted to our lads, “don’t lose the game”.
‘It’s just naive – our managing of the game is terrible, to be honest. At some point these players have got to start waking up and realising that.’
The visitors had taken the lead early on through midfielder Jamie Hilton as GFC got off to a slow start.
Eventually they got a foothold in the game and 10 minutes before half-time Ross Allen equalised from the penalty spot after he had been bundled over in the box.
In the second half, the most likely source of joy for the hosts was through Charlton Gauvain down the right and on a couple of occasions it was hard to explain just how his dangerous crosses had not been turned into the net by a teammate when it seemed harder to miss than score.
Then, as the game entered the last of the five added minutes that had been indicated, substitute Daquio Stewart broke down the left for Binfield, beat a defender and pulled the ball back for Gold to fire home into the bottom corner and snatch all three points.
GFC now have to put the disappointment of this defeat behind them quickly as they have three more games coming up in quick succession, starting at Rayners Lane on Saturday.
‘That’s the frustrating thing because this game was really a game that, particularly at home, we’ve got to be looking better than that,’ Vance said.
‘They’ve stolen the three points, we’ve helped, and that hasn’t really put us in a good position. So there’s a lot of work to be done.’
