Loaring’s big day proves bittersweet as GFC are beaten
MATT LOARING’S big day did not have the ending he wanted.
Guernsey FC’s record appearance holder made it 400 games for the Green Lions on Saturday at Footes Lane, but having seen Owen Wallbridge give his side the lead with a stunning long-range strike, captain-for-the-day Loaring was left to reflect on a 2-1 defeat to Hayes & Yeading United, who made the hosts pay for a couple of unforced errors to take all three points.
‘I always say it to some of the younger lads, it feels like only yesterday when that was me making the first full season and it goes too quickly,’ said Loaring on bringing up his 400th appearance.
‘So yeah, it’s a good achievement. Sad about how it ended up today, but I’m happy to have made that milestone.’
He feels that GFC are progressing as a squad and are not far off turning performances into points, but they must cut out the mistakes to do so.
‘Someone said it to me when we were walking off it’s another game we should have got points and it’s going to end up being our quote of the season at the moment, really, because I can’t remember a game this season where we’ve properly been outclassed or anything like that,’ Loaring said.
‘Actually in every game you could probably argue that if we got something, at least a point, then I don’t think the opposition could have begrudged us that, and that’s the same again today. If we’d have got a point or even three points, I don’t think they’d have been able to say much about that.
‘But football can be cruel in that respect. If you’re not putting that ball in the net – and sometimes that’s happened – or if you’re giving away some sloppy goals, then you can go from getting one or three points to none pretty quickly, and I think that’s happening too often for us at the moment.’
There was better news for GFC on Sunday as their women's side won their first game in the JFA Combination League as they beat Jersey Wanderers 4-1 with goals from Codie Le Flem, Amy Dallamore, Chloe Ingrouille and Donna Gallienne.
