Injuries mounting up for Guernsey Raiders

RAIDERS are facing more injury woes after they slipped to third in National Two East on Saturday.

Henley inflicted only a second defeat in nine games so far this season on Guernsey, but the repercussions of the match could be more significant in the longer term than the 26-15 reverse that left Raiders without even a bonus point for the first time in the campaign.

‘Charlie Currie suffered a suspected ruptured Achilles only three or four minutes into the game,’ said Guernsey director of rugby Jordan Reynolds.

‘He will have to wait for a scan to find out the true diagnosis, but it certainly looks pretty serious and if that proved to be the case, we would probably be unlikely to see him again this season.

‘Liam Welch also had to come off as he got a finger in his eye and has a cut on his actual eyeball, so he will be sidelined for a bit as well.

‘It is a pretty unfortunate time for us at the moment. We have five guys looking like they could have season-ending injuries. We probably had only one of those in five years previously.

‘Rugby-aside, we just feel really bad for those boys because it is not just the physical issue, there is an emotional toll that goes with it, so we’re gutted for all of them,’ added the coach, who lost co-captain Dom Rice to a dislocated ankle and fractured fibula in the last home game a fortnight ago.

Reynolds hopes that the rest of his squad are galvanised by the adversity.

‘I was talking to Dom post the Henley game and even with the injuries we sustained in the match and those already already sidelined, there were no excuses to lose to Henley.

‘We were not beaten by a far superior side, we were still good enough to win, but we caused our own problems on the day.’
