Green Lionesses open up six-point lead in Jersey league
The Green Lionesses made it a magnificent double on Sunday to storm six points clear at the top of the JFA Combination League Women’s Division.
The growing strength in depth of the GFC Women’s squad was on display as they made light of having to play twice in the space of a few hours with convincing victories over Sports Club of Jersey and previously unbeaten Rozel Rovers at Les Quennevais, scoring 20 goals in the process, as they made it four wins from four fixtures so far this campaign.
Sports Club actually took the lead in the morning encounter, but the visitors quickly turned things around and had scored four by half-time with two for captain Candice Bougourd, including a penalty, one for Elise Le Lacheur and a first goal for the club from Mollie Watson.
Grace Van Zutphen and Amy Dallamore scored within a minute of each other at the start of the second half before Le Lacheur netted her second just after the hour-mark and an unfortunate own goal made it eight.
It then became the Calleigh Hedley show as, after starting on the bench to preserve energy for later in the day, she came on and hit a hat-trick in just six minutes.
Donna Gallienne completed the scoring in the 90th minute of the 12-1 win.
The afternoon match was a top-of-the-table clash against a Rozel Rovers side who had also won their first two games.
There were no signs of fatigue from skipper Bougourd as she gave her side an early lead, but Rovers hit back to equalise through Charley Skinner on 12min.
GFC Women then took control of the game, though.
Hedley’s terrific goal, hitting a dropping ball into the top corner from Codie Le Flem’s flick-on, put them ahead again and Adrienne Leech added the third before Hedley went on to complete a first-half hat-trick.
Her second came when she latched onto Scarlett Kenneally’s pass and rounded the keeper while her third was an unstoppable long-range effort.
Rozel got one back before the break from the penalty spot through Emily Le Page, but after the turnaround the Green Lionesses kept up the pressure to complete an 8-2 victory.
Aimee Ogier volleyed in the sixth, Chloe Ingrouille scored a classy seventh and Dallamore steered in the eighth.
GFC Women are on 12 points having played a game more than Rozel Rovers and St Peter, who have six points each. GFC’s next game is against Jersey Wanderers on Sunday 8 December.
