Guernsey’s 400m ace will bring his recent British title credentials to an event in which he holds an enviable position as the home nation’s top-seeded quarter-miler.

‘I’m looking forward to it, it’s great to have won the British Champs a couple weeks ago and it’s always good to go and race the best in Europe and see what I can do,’ he said ahead of an appearance where he will, for the first time at senior level, represent Great Britain in both the relays and an individual event.

Chalmers has been a key component of GB’s elite 4x400m squads in recent times, but a few surprises may await in this particular relay outing.

Amid the pressure of a straight-final between six teams on Sunday evening and the unpredictability of indoor competition, he has medal ambitions.

‘Anything can happen in that,’ said Chalmers.

‘You don’t know what to look for, you’ve no clue what some people have run and what people are planning – anybody can win it ... there’s a big chance of a medal for us.’

The Sarnian will tune up with the stages of individual 400m competition, making his first such appearance as a senior GB representative. Heats begin at 10.20am today as he works towards tomorrow evening’s final.

‘I think I am ranked pretty well so it should mean I get a decent lane in the heat, and it’s a bit cliche but I’ll take it race-by-race and as I said about the relays, anything can happen.’

Live coverage of the championships is on the BBC.
