Cricket: New Euro date but still doubts
GUERNSEY cricket is ‘hopeful’ but not holding its breath on whether it can play in next summer’s rearranged European T20 Qualifier in Finland.
The ICC have given Guernsey dates for the rearranged eight-team tournament – 28 June to 6 July – but whether the Sarnians get there remains anyone’s guess.
With regard to the Covid situation the ICC have a 28 March deadline for a yes/no on whether the tournament will go ahead, but Guernsey Cricket Board CEO Mark Latter still believes it is unlikely.
‘There are so many variables... it’s impossible to call,’ said Latter yesterday.
An early decision will benefit Guernsey as the tournament decision has knock-on effects for both Sarnian and Channel Islands cricket.
Both islands still hope to play a CI League in its full format next season, which would be after the ICC tournament, but obviously that is still very much up in the air.
A revived ‘GPL’ could take its place, or be held in a shorter form at the start of the season.
Far more certain in a domestic sporting world juggling with Covid-19 restrictions is that the local Evening League will go ahead and have six teams in the top flight once again.
There will be one significant difference to last year’s successful campaign for the Rozel Shield, with each club playing each other once on the KGV mat and once on grass.
Meanwhile, former Siam Cup rugby captain Carl Johnson has been officially voted in as chairman of the GCB, replacing David Nussbaumer, who stood down after many years’ service.
Philippa Stahelin’s place on the board as an overseer director was also ratified.
The full board is:
Chairman – Carl Johnson; secretary – Martin Tolcher; treasurer – Mike Savage. Overseer directors – Stuart Bisson, Chris Edwards, Philippa Stahelin. Ex-officio members – David Brooks, David Piesing and Stuart Le Prevost. CEO – Mark Latter.
