The budding professional came within just 20sec. of matching the now eight times time trial champion, the Games cycling legend that is the Isle of Man's Andrew Roche.
While Roche clocked 58min. 21sec. for the 42.5 kilometre course on the south coast, McLaughlin posted 58.47, just over a minute up on the talented Isle of Wight rider, Nick Hutchings.
Tobyn Horton rode arguably his best time trial anywhere to take fourth and he was more than happy with the evening's work for both himself and his team-mates.
