Robin bemoans missed chances

TWO months ago Rovers looked nailed on winners of a second straight FNB Priaulx League title.

But sunk by Scott Bougourd’s scrambled late winner at Port Soif on Saturday afternoon, the final month of the league campaign has flowered into a reinvigorated three-way title race.

After the 2-1 defeat, their second in four games in the space of 17 days, Jez Robin’s side still head the table by two points, but no longer have any games in hand on second-placed St Martin’s.

North, meanwhile, are now within nine of the champions with two games in hand among the nine league clashes they still have to fit in before the season’s end.

It all makes for a tasty last month of the campaign, especially as North have to play Rovers once more, as well as Saints twice.

Although the fixture schedule still favours his club, Robin knows his side are in for a battle, just as Saturday’s clash on a heavy pitch, proved to be.

‘I think that’s how it is going to be till the end,’ said Robin, as he reflected on a feisty, tight affair.

‘I thought we were the better side and created the better chances, but we didn’t put them away. We should have been 3-0 up before they scored their first goal.’

Rovers had another effort cleared off the line, but Robin put right those who thought the ball had crossed the line.

‘No, the boys said it wasn’t over the line, but on it.’

Rovers still have to play North once more, while the chocolate-and-blues have also to play Saints twice.

Kieran Mahon enjoyed a strong game in the home midfield but tweaked a hamstring late on which threatens his bid for a late Muratti squad call-up and more GFC action.

The Green Lions are at home to Chipstead today.
