It’s lift-off for Legg's revived career

ROBBIE LEGG still can’t quite believe it.

One moment he is nearly writing himself off with ‘ACL’ injury woes and then, dramatically, he is shooting Guernsey into the history books.

The two-goal hero of Saturday’s U21 Muratti clash now vows to kick on with a return to Guernsey FC colours.

The capture of a fifth consecutive Ambassadeur Bowl granted Guernsey a new record in the competition’s history, but as he admits, playing a key role in the drama unfolding at Springfield seemed so unlikely after badly damaging his knee back in December 2017.

‘Not many words to explain it, apart from it being special,’ said Legg.

‘We definitely knew we could achieve five in a row but I’d had 16 months out and in the first game back, it was pretty unreal.’

The seriousness of an ACL [anterior cruciate ligaments] injury is not to be underestimated for a young footballer, with Legg commenting straight-faced: ‘I probably would have been better off breaking a leg.’

He had to re-learn how to jog and only had a few months of full training in the buildup to the game, but his training performances in that limited time had swayed the U21 coaches to include him in the match-day squad.

And in the face of doubt, Legg broke all expectations with two vital goals in the final 10 minutes.

‘I just went for it – it was one of those things that until you do it, you never know what’s going to happen,’ he added.

Saturday’s excellence made for a dramatic start and end to his competitive season, but it has certainly opened a few avenues for what’s ahead.

Legg hopes to return to Guernsey FC action next campaign and bolster a side that, in his opinion, have been unfortunate victims of circumstance within their Bostik South East season.

‘We’re in a situation where such is the football we’re playing, we definitely do not deserve to be down where we are,’ he said.

‘If we survive and stay in this league, then that will benefit everyone that has played for them.’

Of course, he also has a few individual aspirations as he seeks to advance himself as a player.

For Legg, the top priority is simply to get a few more minutes on the pitch and build up for future action.

‘From a selfish point of view, I would like to set a couple of goal and assist targets. The majority of players set that, but I’d also like to get some appearances,’ he added.

‘Since I’ve been playing, I’ve not had a full season, for various reasons. For the next season, the best thing for me is to get some minutes with the boys.’
