North sign Sylvans trio

NORTH have raided St Peter’s as they determinedly attempt to make amends for being robbed of last season’s FNB Priaulx League title.

Guernsey FC forward Robbie Legg, midfielder Brandon Le Poidevin and wing back Sam Mahy are all heading to Northfield, where they will find two more familiar former westerners in forwards Sam Murray and Jose Alvarez.

Their departures came as no surprise to Martyn de Garis, who worked small wonders with a young Sylvans squad last season.

It will be even younger this campaign, he said yesterday.

‘Robbie we haven’t seen more than once but it’s still disappointing to lose some players. We have got alternatives, but when you are developing a squad [it’s a loss]. Sam Mahy was an important part of that as we spent time working on him.

‘But players come and go and you have to get on with it.’

A boost for de Garis is that Jacob Fallaize and Seb Smeed are both training with the club and will play until such time they are permitted to return to their USA studies.

Sylvans were pushing hard for a top-three spot when last season ended prematurely and they retain strong options in attack, where Kyle Smith is as good as anyone.

In the UK, fans of GFC’s rival Isthmian league clubs have been speculating on social media over a possible restart, the debate having been prompted by league chairman Nick Robinson’s newsletter comments and the remark: ‘We’re all seriously hoping we will be able to get back to competitive football in October’. The Isthmian site clarified that while the ‘letter’ gave some reason for optimism that football will return sooner rather than later, there were still many factors which will govern that and they are all outside the league’s control.

The only certainty is that the league will not start behind closed doors.
