Track floodlight failure puts cup tie in dark

A FLOODLIGHT failure at the Track led to the abandonment of a Mauger Cup encounter and seemed to cast a shadow on next week’s top-flight action.

Thankfully, Belgrave Wanderers president Andy Robert expects no ill effects from that incident, aside from the rescheduling of that particular second-string match.

Rovers were leading Bels 2-0 just before the half-time whistle on Wednesday night, but once the lights were switched on to counteract the darkening evening skies, the issue became apparent.

Officials spoke to the referee and decided to abandon the game.

Working lights will be in demand for next Tuesday night, when landlords Bels’ Rawlinson Cup-winning first team are due to face their tenants, Manzur, in their second game of the new FNB Priaulx League campaign.

Robert is confident of addressing the issue before the 7.30pm kick-off.

‘We do not envisage it being a problem at the moment and we think we can repair the lights relatively quickly,’ he said.

‘It’s just one of those things that happens.

‘The facilities have been there forever and a day and sometimes problems happen and they need to be addressed as quickly as possible and we then try to make sure they do not reoccur.’
