Mahon brothers swap places

A MAHON for a Mahon and returns for Charlton Gauvain and Cal Stanton is the selection news Tony Vance offered up yesterday ahead of today’s Bostik South East League visit to Haywards Heath Town.

In naming a 15-man squad, the GFC boss also gives a bench spot to 15-year-old Tom Jackson, the London-based godson of assistant coach Steve Sharman.

‘He’s a good little player, wants to play for us and regularly trains with us in school holidays,’ says Vance of a player who was on Wimbledon’s books.

Whether he gets any pitch time is open to doubt as it is a strong travelling group already.

Gauvain has overcome his ankle strain sufficiently to be involved and Liam Mahon’s hamstring is fine after a period of rest.

‘Liam’s been training with us a couple of weeks and he started the season really well for us. It softens the blow of losing Kez, who rolled an ankle against Ramsgate.’

The elder Mahon is expected to be out for no more than a couple of weeks and another who could be back soon is Craig Young, who is back in regular training.

Back in October GFC beat today’s opponents 3-1 at Footes Lane, that despite playing the vast majority of the game with 10 men after the early dismissal of Kez Mahon.

Haywards Heath held fellow promotion-chasing Hythe Town to a 0-0 draw last week and lie sixth in the table.

SQUAD: Cal Stanton, Tom de la Mare, Frank Tobin, Jamie Dodd, Tom Dodds, Charlton Gauvain, Seb Skillen, Dave Rihoy, Matt Loaring, Paris Pereira, Carlos Canha, Will Fazakerley, Liam Mahon, Kyle Smith and Tom Jackson.
