Green Lions grab vital point as rivals lose

TONY VANCE and his men did not get the win they were desperate for, but a point at home to Faversham may yet prove vital, especially as the visitors were denied a nailed on penalty in stoppage time at Footes Lane.

And while it did not prove much of a big Muratti day for Alderney, who went down 2-0 to Jersey, it was ultimately a useful one for the Green Lions who trailed early on, hit back to lead 2-1 early in the second half and then conceded a late equaliser on an afternoon when four of their other five relegation rivals lost.

‘The two goals we conceded were disappointing and that was really frustrating because for me we dominated possession of the ball and I thought we were really good today.

‘They got that early goal and would be difficult to break down and they also had that aerial threat, as well as 11 referees on their team.

‘They were doing anything and everything they could to get the points and fair play to our lads who kept going, kept trying to play and break them down. Very nearly, the footballing team won.’

Faversham were convinced they should have had a stoppage time penalty, but the GFC boss argued that perhaps the visitors’ poor attitude cost them the decision.

‘Maybe the way they behaved this afternoon cost them that decision.

‘They gave the referee an absolutely torrid time and I think it is disgusting the way they spoke to him.

‘But that’s what they are brought up to do and some of the abuse we had to take is not what it should be. They will do anything to win a game of football but very nearly the footballing team won.’

Greenwich Borough, the side filling the one relegation spot at present, lost 2-1 at Sevenoaks Town, while Herne Bay went down 2-0 to VCD Athletic, Sittingbourne lost 3-0 at home and There Bridges lost 3-1.
