Guernsey FC complete their run of three games against sides fighting for promotion towards the top of Isthmian South Central by welcoming fourth-placed Hanwell Town, who apparently have around 16,000 Newcastle United supporters in their fan base due to their origins.

The west London-based club were founded in 1920 by a group of workers from Newcastle and they adopted the black-and-white stripes and nicknamed themselves the Geordies.

So far this season they have won 16 and lost only six of their 28 league games.

‘They are obviously pushing for the play-offs and I think they made their intentions clear a couple of months into the season when they signed the top scorer in the league [Tom Collins] and he has continued scoring goals for them,’ said GFC manager Tony Vance. ‘It will be another challenge for us, but as we proved against Marlow at home last weekend and to a certain degree at Bracknell Town in midweek, we should not fear anyone.

‘Being a home game as well, we have to go out and attack.’

Vance had yet to finalise his side yesterday afternoon, but he revealed that while Kyle Smith will miss out having gone off injured in the first half against Bracknell Town, Ben Acey is set to return.

The manager also had a word of praise for Smith’s replacement on Wednesday, Keene Domaille.

‘We had set ourselves up in a certain way and bringing Keene on after just 25 minutes was no problem. It was great for his learning experience to feature against the top side, but if we had put him in his favoured position it would have meant two or three other positional changes.

‘So Fal [coach Colin Fallaize] suggested we chuck him on at left midfield and it was a great call, he did a good job for the team and that is testament to his football brain and ability.

‘I think his quote after the game was that he did not feel like he has ever run as much.’

Vance also gave a special mention to his coach’s son for his performances during the week and beyond.

‘Jacob [Fallaize] has been inspirational since he has been back. He is a real leader, a colossus and at set-pieces, both for and against, he is a real asset.’
