Rezzers treble is ‘dream’ scenario

REZZERS GREEN’S title three-peat in the Premier Division shows that they are a team very much at the top of their game.

Yet this third straight championship victory boiled down to a winner-takes-all season finale against Lightning A on Tuesday night, which they won 45-39 after entering level on points with their rivals.

This tight competition justified Rezzers captain Tiff Gervaise-Brazier’s claim that their apparent dominance – they have won four of the last five titles, only missing out narrowly to Blaze A in a 2018-19 decider – does not tell the full story.

‘Although that was the third year in a row, it’s not a reflection of the league,’ she said.

‘It could have gone either way tonight. Lightning have taken points off us and Blaze have taken points off us this season.

‘We have had a few close games and it has not come easily for us.’

Green’s impressive streak of top honours is not the only treble they have sealed this season.

Rezzers had already won the Premier Plate through their second-string Black team, plus their young Whites confirmed their Division One crown this week, making it a wonderful Winter League treble for the wider club.

‘That’s all you can ask for, really – that kind of dominance, it’s what you dream of as a club,’ Gervaise-Brazier added.

In fact, the first-team captain credits having ‘two really good squads’ below for their championship streak at the very top.

Their latest campaign has come with various disruptions, not least injury to star shooter Verona Tomlin, but promising step-ups continue to support their proven core seven.

This showed in the high-stakes finale as teenage GA Emma Sykes displayed remarkable composure to earn player of the match.
