Konta wins the battle of the Brits

Tennis | Published:

GUERNSEY’S finest was unable to defy the rankings yesterday as Heather Watson lost out in the battle of Britain’s top two players.

It was a hard-fought and close encounter with fourth seed Johanna Konta in the second round of the Nature Valley Open in Nottingham, but the British No. 1 had the edge at the business end of both sets as she defeated the Sarnian 6-4, 7-6 (5).

‘I feel fortunate to come through that because there was very little in it,’ said Konta, who crucially converted two of the three break points she had in the match while Watson managed to convert just one of her four, although her first-serve percentage was good at 76%.
