Neymar, Mbappe and Cavani all on target as five-star PSG thrash Celtic

The world’s most expensive frontline did the damage in the first-half as Brazilian star Neymar opened the scoring in the 19th minute before 18-year-old French sensation Kylian Mbappe added a second in the 34th minute with Edinson Cavani scoring with a penalty before the break.

A fan from among the home supporters revealed his frustration when he came on to the pitch to aim a fresh-air kick at Mbappe before being escorted away by stewards and there was more distress after the break.

Brendan Rodgers’ side performed better in the second-half but in the latter stages Celtic defender Mikael Lustig put through his own goal before Cavani grabbed his second with a clever header to hand the Bhoys their record home defeat in Europe.

For all the expensively-assembled stars in the PSG ranks, it was one of their home-grown recruits who shone the brightest. The France international possesses both a terrific eye for a pass and the effortless accuracy needed to act upon it, not to mention a tireless work-rate. Neymar, Mbappe and Cavani will battle it out for the scoring awards this season but they will all likely have Rabiot to thank for the glut of goals he is bound to provide.

Tough introduction for Anthony Ralston

It was always going to be a big ask for Celtic’s 18-year-old right-back to subdue one of the most gifted players on the planet. There was little doubt he was caught flat-footed as Neymar galloped in for PSG’s opener but that apart the Scotland Under-21 prospect can look back on his Champions League debut with pride. His surging run early in the second period deserved to be finished off with a goal but sadly for Ralston, he was crowded out.

Celtic facing more disciplinary trouble

On a difficult night on the pitch, the last thing Celtic needed was yet another run-in with UEFA disciplinary chiefs. The European governing body has already fined Celtic 11 times in less than six years over fan-behaviour issues ranging from pro-IRA chants to fireworks, crowd disturbances and illicit banners. They can now expect a fresh charge after a supporter burst from the home end to confront Mbappe towards the end of the first half. A kick was aimed at the former Monaco star – but did not connect – before stewards could whisk the invader away.
