When Alex McKinnon was diagnosed as a quadriplegic in 2014, ending a promising rugby league career, he made a vow.

The former Newcastle Knight proposed to Teigan Power shortly after the on-field accident which cut his career short, and committed himself to standing come the ceremony.

And, over the weekend, the 25-year-old was true to his word and rose from his wheelchair to meet Teigan at the altar, saying that his “dream had come true”.

Speaking to New Idea, Tiegan McKinnon said: “I was pretty shocked to tell you the truth. I couldn’t believe Alex stood for all that time.

“It was lovely to be able to look him in the eye, rather than looking down at him in his wheelchair. It just made the ceremony that much more intimate. We started crying every time we caught each other’s eye. It was beautiful.”
