Sports stars from around the globe have sent ‘get well’ messages to Gordon Hayward after the Boston Celtics new recruit suffered a horrific ankle injury on Tuesday evening.

The 2017 All-Star was just six minutes into his debut against the Cleveland Cavaliers when he landed awkwardly after colliding with LeBron James and Jae Crowder, whilst attempting to finish off an alley-oop pass from fellow debutant Kyrie Irving.

Players looked visibly shaken as Hayward lay on the court in agony with a clearly twisted left ankle.

The Celtics later confirmed that the 27-year-old had suffered a fractured ankle on Twitter, with the small forward set to miss majority, if not all, of the season.

Boston were leading 12-9 in the season-opener in Cleveland when Hayward was stretchered off the court before last year’s NBA finalists came back to run out 102-99 winners.

The Golden State Warriors’ point guard Stephen Curry and the Oklahoma City Thunder small forward Paul George were among some of the league’s high-profile players to post their well-wishes on Twitter.

The New York Giants’ wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr, who is sidelined with a fractured ankle, and the Houston Texans’ defensive J.J. Watt also posted on social media.

England international footballer Jack Butland, who suffered a similar injury in March 2016, and Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, both well-known basketball fans, sent messages to Hayward on social media.
