Everton’s Europa League adventure ends after away defeat to Lyon

The dismissal of Morgan Schneiderlin capped a miserable night for the Toffees.

Managerless Everton crashed out of the Europa League with two Group E games left to play as they were beaten 3-0 at Lyon.

Former Chelsea forward Bertrand Traore, who had netted the winner in Lyon’s 2-1 victory at Goodison Park a fortnight ago, opened the scoring midway through the second half, before substitute Houssem Aouar and former Manchester United man and Everton transfer target Memphis Depay wrapped things up.

The 80th minute dismissal of Morgan Schneiderlin, following a second yellow card, capped a miserable night for the Toffees.

Star Man – Memphis Depay

The former Manchester United man and Everton transfer target teed up one goal, scored another and generally caused problems for the visitors’ defence. Looks like a far more confident player than the one who struggled at United.

Unsworth’s audition

This was a third match for Everton under caretaker boss David Unsworth, who has said he would like to be Ronald Koeman’s permanent successor. He felt there were encouraging signs in the performances in the first two games, and it was not until the final quarter of this game that things really got away from the Toffees – but the bottom line is that three losses is not a great audition so far.

An eye on Sunday

It was clear from Unsworth’s selection, featuring six changes and Gylfi Sigurdsson as a false nine, how important he sees Sunday’s home Premier League clash with Watford. Wayne Rooney, Leighton Baines and Phil Jagielka did not travel to France in order to keep fresh for the weekend’s game.
