Kyle Edmund’s Australian Open adventure is over after he lost in straight sets to Marin Cilic in the semi-finals.

Cilic is through to his third grand slam final and first in Melbourne and will face either Roger Federer or Chung Hyeon on Sunday.

The women’s semi-finals featured a titanic battle between Simona Halep and Angelique Kerber, with Halep coming out on top after saving two match points. In the final she will face Caroline Wozniacki, with a first slam title and world number one up for grabs for both.

“I thought he was joking at first until he got right off the court,” said McHugh. “I was like, ‘right, he’s actually making me do this’. I almost got one of the passes but I blame my jacket for it to be honest. Roger was really nice afterwards, he was laughing about it. I did tell him that I would get him next time. I will need to try and do well quickly if I’m going to get a chance to play him, unless he is still going at 50. Maybe not have the jacket on next time.”

Friday highlights

The main event comes in the evening session when Federer takes on Chung for the right to play Cilic in the final.

It is a real clash of youth and experience, with 21-year-old Korean Chung playing in his first grand slam semi-final and defending champion Federer his 43rd.

McHugh will hope to succeed where Edmund could not by reaching the boys’ final when he takes on sixth seed Chun Hsin Tseng from Chinese Taipei.
