North Korean team attend Winter Olympics welcome ceremony in Pyeongchang

North Korean athletes attended their welcome ceremony in the Athletes’ Village at the Winter Olympics on Thursday.

North Korea’s Winter Olympics delegation were swamped by media as they attended their welcome ceremony at the Athletes’ Village in Gangneung on Thursday.

Ten North Korean athletes are due to compete at the Games, which officially start on Friday, including 17 athletes, seven of whom will participate as part of a unified Korean women’s ice hockey team.

Earlier, North Korea confirmed that the sister of leader Kim Jong-un, Kim Yo-jong, will become the nation’s highest-ranked official to visit the South when she attends the opening ceremony.

Meanwhile, athletes have been given special clothing including salopettes and fleece-lined beanie hats for the ceremony amid fears about plunging temperatures in Pyeongchang.
