Callum Wilson hits late winner as Bournemouth beat Europa League-bound Burnley

Bournemouth gatecrashed Burnley’s European party with a 2-1 victory at Turf Moor.

A sell-out home crowd soaked up the spring sunshine and looked set to celebrate a final win of the Premier League campaign when Chris Wood gave the Clarets the lead in the 39th minute.

But Bournemouth deserved the equaliser given to them by a fine Josh King effort 16 minutes from time and snatched all three points in added time when Kevin Long’s mistake was punished by substitute Callum Wilson.

Sean Dyche was without Ashley Barnes but had Wood available again. Two departing favourites, Scott Arfield and Dean Marney, turned down the chance to appear on the bench one last time so youth player of the season Dwight McNeil made the senior squad for the first time.

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe took the opportunity to make four changes, giving midfielder Emerson Hyndman a Premier League debut while Tyrone Mings, Lys Mousset and Jordon Ibe also started.

The game certainly had an end-of-season feel to it and it took until the 21st minute for the first meaningful shot, Burnley’s player of the season Nick Pope producing a good save to deny Mousset after good work from Ibe down the right.

Pope was called on again to beat away a fierce effort from Charlie Daniels but the final 20 minutes of the half belonged to Burnley.

After Jack Cork shot wide, Wood’s blushes were spared by an offside flag when he somehow lifted the ball over an open goal from barely five yards out.

The New Zealander was much sharper seven minutes later, although how much he knew about the goal is open to debate. Stephen Ward got to the byline and dinked in a cross that was stabbed towards goal by Ashley Westwood. The effort looked to be going wide but hit Wood and bounced into the opposite corner.

Hyndman’s debut ended just before the hour mark when he was replaced by Dan Gosling while Burnley were forced into a change when Wood hobbled off and Sam Vokes came on.

Bournemouth had their own injury troubles as Mings, who is no stranger to knee problems, went down holding his left one and walked gingerly off to be replaced by Jermain Defoe.

Bournemouth finally got their reward in the 74th minute. Pope saved well from Defoe but the ball was worked back to King on the left and he curled a lovely shot into the far corner.

The game looked to be petering out into a draw when Long’s slip was seized on by Defoe, who set up Wilson for a confident finish under Pope.
