Dom Bess claimed his first Test wicket as England claimed a crucial post-lunch double blow on the third day of the second NatWest Test against Pakistan at Headingley.

The Somerset spinner beat the defensive stroke of Imam ul-Haq to dismiss the left-handed opener leg before for 34.

Chris Woakes then trapped Sarfraz Ahmed leg before for eight.

Bess’ maiden Test wicket ended a fourth-wicket partnership of 42 between Imam and Usman Salahuddin and the dismissal of Sarfraz left Pakistan’s second innings on 97 for five – still 92 runs from making England bat again.

Anderson removed Azhar Ali (11) and Haris Sohail (8) – with Bess taking an excellent diving catch at mid-off – while Asad Shafiq (8) gloved Broad down the legside to wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow.

England established a 189-run lead in the morning session with Jos Buttler ending unbeaten on 80 in their total of 363.
