A guide to how England’s players could fill their spare time in Russia
Gareth Southgate’s men kick off their World Cup campaign against Tunisia on June 18.
England’s World Cup campaign will be judged on performances and results, but the squad will also have plenty of time to fill between training sessions and games.
Here, Press Association Sport looks at how the players could fill their spare time.
Gaming
Players are known for their love of video games and plenty of PlayStations and Xboxes are likely to be making the trip to Russia along with the spare pairs of boots. Dele Alli and Harry Kane have spoken of how much they enjoy survival game ‘Fortnite’ with Jesse Lingard and Eric Dier liking ‘Call of Duty’. Alli has even incorporated an action sequence from Fortnite into a goal celebration. Football gaming is also popular too, with Lingard regularly taking on his Manchester United team-mate Marcus Rashford at FIFA.
Games
Card games are an old favourite of footballers, although rather than just using a traditional deck, Alli may hope to get some of his colleagues playing Uno. As revealed on social media, the midfielder has been at the heart of games in the Tottenham dressing room. Jamie Vardy likes darts, Ruben Loftus-Cheek is keen on tennis and Rashford enjoys pool. Fabian Delph says he is passionate about boxing but Gareth Southgate is unlikely to sanction the staging of any bouts.
Music
After training, the squad may choose to unwind by getting out the iPods and playing some music in their rooms. For some players that could be grime, with Raheem Sterling and Lingard confirmed fans, while Alli likes rappers such as Future and Drake. Loftus-Cheek is a Meek Mill fan. Ashley Young, who is the DJ of the Manchester United dressing room, enjoys house and hip-hop but has admitted that playing the occasional bit of old skool dance bemuses the youngsters. Jordan Pickford’s love of rave was recognised in a hashtag from fans during his time at Sunderland. Kane has been the subject of some gentle ribbing from team-mates in the past after revealing Justin Bieber tracks as his guilty pleasure.
Films and TV
Movies are sure to be watched too. Alli enjoys his films but is no fan of horror if past tweets about The Conjuring are anything to go by. TV box sets are also likely to be popular. Kane ranks Dexter and Prison Break among his past favourites. It remains to be seen, however, if Danny Rose and Delph, who recently joked about Love Island, will be able to keep up with the reality show while away.
