Story of the match: England make it four in a row against Australia

Jason Roy scored a century as the home side cruised to a six-wicket victory.

Published

Jason Roy’s century headlined another breathtaking display as England trounced Australia by six wickets at Chester-le-Street to put themselves on course for a 5-0 whitewash.

An opening stand of 174 between Roy (101) and Jonny Bairstow (79) kickstarted England’s second highest successful one-day international run chase, before Jos Buttler (54no) joined in with a remarkable 28-ball fifty.

They therefore knocked off a ground record 310 for eight with more than five overs to spare – before the floodlights could take effect on the longest day of the year.

No need for records

England cruised to a fourth straight ODI win over Australia but there was no repeat of their record-breaking batting from Trent Bridge. Not that there needed to be. The home side had hit a world record 481 for six in Nottingham to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series. In contrast, victory in Durham came in under 45 overs as they chased down Australia’s total.

Rashid is top England ODI spinner

Adil Rashid became England’s all-time top spinner in one-day internationals when Travis Head and Ashton Agar became his 105th and 106th wickets. Head’s wicket moved him above Graeme Swann in England’s all-time ODI list. Rashid’s 106 victims have come in 69 matches and he now ranks 11th in the list for all England bowlers in ODIs.

Not quite a hat-trick for Willey

David Willey was denied a hat-trick but still claimed three wickets in five balls in the 48th over of Australia’s innings as he proved what a good death bowler he is. First he had Alex Carey caught at deep midwicket. Then Roy caught Shaun Marsh on the long-on boundary before tossing the ball up for Craig Overton to cling on to before crossing the rope. Three balls later Willey induced an edge from Michael Neser and Buttler held the catch behind the stumps.

Plunkett sidelined once more

Yorkshie bowler Liam Plunkett recently said he would be speaking to other counties after being dropped but found himself on the sidelines once again at his former county Durham whilst on England duty. England decided to rest Plunkett and instead gave a debut to Overton. But he failed to impress with figures of nought for 55 from seven overs.
