Katie Archibald won her second medal at the European Championships in Glasgow but she was forced to settle for silver in the women’s omnium.

The 24-year-old was eclipsed by Dutch world champion Kirsten Wild who stretched her initial two-point lead to win by 12 in the concluding points race.

Archibald’s silver medal added to the gold she won as part of the women’s team pursuit squad on Friday.

Archibald, herself a former world omnium champion, had given herself a shot at a second gold after winning the sprint, the third race of the four-part competition.

But Wild produced a brilliant tactical performance, shadowing the Scot throughout and taking victory by 156 points to Archibald’s 144.

Archibald will get a chance of a third and final medal when she teams up with Laura Kenny in the madison on Tuesday.

She said: “I don’t think my legs were that terrible but I was just not quite good enough – me and Laura are still a fairly formidable team.

“There wasn’t much I could do and I realised quite early on that I didn’t have the speed. I wasn’t fast enough and I was never going to get ahead and get a lap gain.”

Fellow Brits Ethan Hayter and Ollie Wood took bronze in the men’s madison behind Belgium and Germany.

Hayter said: “Obviously we came here looking to win but we missed a couple of opportunities that we should have followed and were a bit scared to attack by ourselves.”

But there was no medal for Paisley-born Jack Carlin who was edged out in the battle for men’s sprint bronze by Holland’s Harrie Lavreysen.

Earlier, Carlin had been denied a place in the final when he was beaten over three races by the eventual silver medallist, Stefan Botticher of Germany.
