Coad guides Yorkshire to victory over Kent

The seamer posted a season’s best six for 52 at Canterbury.

Ben Coad’s six-wicket haul helped Yorkshire to a 172-run Specsavers County Championship win against Kent at Canterbury.

Yorkshire seamer Coad mopped up Kent’s tail with a season’s best six for 52 as the visitors claimed the seven wickets needed for victory.

Facing an improbable victory target of 384, Kent did well to take the match into its final session before being bowled out for 211.

Yorkshire’s second win of the campaign lifts them up to second in Division One, while Kent dropped to fifth after their second defeat.

Somerset remain top after their rain-affected match against title-holders Surrey ended in a draw.

Surrey began the day on 152 for five and moved on to 187 without further loss for a lead of 134 when rain halted play.

When the action resumed, Somerset dismissed Morne Morkel (27), Will Jacks (54) and Dean Elgar (17) to leave Surrey 247 for eight at tea and they had moved on to 255, and a lead of 237, when bad light ended play.

Somerset took 11 points, having won their opening two Championship matches, while title-holders Surrey claimed 12 points.

Hampshire wrapped up a 314-run win against Warwickshire at Edgbaston after the hosts were skittled for 109.

Warwickshire lost eight wickets in little more than two hours having resumed on 42 for two after a rain-delayed start.

Hampshire’s Fidel Edwards took three for 36, while former Warwickshire bowler Keith Barker, Liam Dawson and Kyle Abbott claimed two each.

In Division Two, Worcestershire sealed a five-wicket win against Durham and sit top of the table after two matches.

Josh Tongue’s five for 37 helped reduce Durham’s second innings to 197 all out and although Durham’s Chris Rushworth (five for 28) ripped through Worcestershire’s top order, the hosts reached their modest target of 81 in the 20th over, finishing on 84 for five.

Leicestershire’s hopes of a first County Championship win at Lord’s for 39 years were thwarted by rain as their see-saw clash with Middlesex ended in a draw.

The pendulum had appeared to swing back in the visitors’ favour, with Colin Ackermann unbeaten on 70 from 88 balls and five wickets standing as they chased a victory target of 305.

But the overcast conditions, which led to five separate stoppages during the final day, eventually triumphed as the match was abandoned with the Foxes on 226 for five – still 79 short.

Lancashire wrapped up a comprehensive  10-wicket win against Northamptonshire after just 16 balls and eight minutes of the final day at Old Trafford.

Needing 16 runs to win after they had bowled out Northamptonshire for 200 on the third day, Lancashire openers Haseeb Hameed and Keaton Jennings were both unbeaten when victory was secured.

Lancashire secured back-to-back Championship wins and their first in Manchester since the final game of the 2017 season as they bid for a quick return to Division One following relegation last season.

Northamptonshire remain winless in their first three games following draws in their opening two fixtures.

Glamorgan’s game against Gloucestershire in Newport ended in a draw after the visitors held on to reach 137 for six at the close.

The hosts had declared their second innings on 481 for eight, with Nick Selman (150) and Marius Labuschange (137) both making career-best scores.
