1989: Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Mohammad took 12 hours to score 163 runs against New Zealand in Wellington, including a record 11-and-a-half hours to reach 150.
1991: BBC television commentator Ron Pickering died aged 60. A renowned coach, he guided Lynn Davies to the 1964 Olympic long jump gold medal.
1999: Arsenal offered to replay their FA Cup third-round clash against Sheffield United after a controversial Marc Overmars goal had decided the original tie.
2009: The second Test between England and West Indies was abandoned after 10 balls when the playing surface at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua was deemed unfit. The match was relocated to the Antigua Recreation Ground two days later and ended as a draw.
2012: Wolves sacked manager Mick McCarthy after six years in charge at Molineux, during which he led the club to the Premier League.
2017: Joe Root described himself as “privileged, humbled and very excited” after being confirmed as England’s new Test captain.
2018: West Brom sacked chairman John Williams and chief executive Martin Goodman and placed them on gardening leave with immediate effect.
2021: Jonny May accelerated clear as England’s second-highest try-scorer with a stunning finish as Italy fell to a 41-18 Guinness Six Nations defeat at Twickenham.
2022: The Los Angeles Rams beat the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 in the Super Bowl.
2024: The Premier League approved Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s purchase of a minority stake in Manchester United.
