Five-time grand-slam champion Iga Swiatek has received “additional security” at the Miami Open after a spectator was reported for threatening behaviour.

The PA news agency understands the incident occurred last week and Swiatek’s team immediately informed tournament organisers alongside the WTA.

Enhanced security has followed for world number two Swiatek, who is the second high-profile player in recent weeks to be disturbed by a spectator after a man displaying “fixated behaviour” approached Emma Raducanu at the Dubai Tennis Championships.

Swiatek’s run in Florida ended on Wednesday night after a shock 6-2 7-5 quarter-final defeat to wild card Alexandra Eala.

A spokesperson for Swiatek’s team told PA: “Security is a top priority.

“We monitor the network to catch these types of issues. Constructive criticism is one thing and threats, hate speech or even disturbance during training is another – this cannot be condoned.

“We reported the matter to the tournament organiser, as well as to the WTA, which reacted immediately and took additional precautions, such as additional security, for which we are very grateful.

“Ensuring the safety of the players is crucial. They are the ones at the centre of the event and it is our job to protect them.”

“The WTA works closely with tournaments and their security teams on best practices for international sporting events to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all participants.

“There are comprehensive security protocols in place to make sure that any incidents are handled promptly and effectively.

“The details of these are not something we discuss publicly, but we are steadfast in our commitment to maintaining a safe environment for players and everyone attending one of our events.”

Swiatek’s wait for another title extended on Wednesday after she lost in straight sets to world number 140 Eala in Miami.

Eala bounced back impressively from being broken in the first game of the match to comprehensively take the opener 6-2.

Swiatek’s level improved in the second set and she established a 4-2 lead, but Eala continued to force her Polish opponents into mistakes with a smart variety of shots and won five of the final six games to progress after a one-hour-and-40-minute battle.

It means Swiatek remains without a title win in 2025 and last tasted success at Roland Garros in June.
