Andy Murray valiantly battled through his third round match against Italy’s Fabio Fognini on Friday, to the utter delight of his online fans.

Adoring spectators lined up to praise the stalwart Scot for his remarkable performance, including former world number four, Pat Cash.

But Murray’s timing put the icing on the cake for many, who couldn’t help but notice they’d been treated to an epic game of tennis, which finished just in time for Love Island on ITV2.

The match wasn’t without its ups and downs, but the enthusiasm shown by telly fans everywhere for Murray’s ability to wrap things up before the latest Love Island action was broadcast definitely raised the game to legendary status where some were concerned.

However, after sealing his victory, Murray was keen to point out the game had been anything but smooth sailing, and criticised the state of the court.

He said: “The court I don’t think is in as good a condition as previous years.

“There’s quite a few spots on the court, just behind the baseline and just in front of the baseline, where there’s quite big lumps of grass, almost like little divots there, which I don’t remember really being the case.”

His Italian opponent was stronger in his criticism, and took a medical time-out during the third set to have his right ankle and foot taped after encountering Achilles tendon problems.

Murray will now have a two day break before facing world 46th seed Benoit Paire on Monday, for a chance to make it into the quarter finals.

Let’s see if he can get the job done before the next instalment of Love Island threatens to interrupt his flow.
