England’s semi-final European Championship exit came as a shock to a nation that had seen the Lionesses win their first four games, but still the nation were proud of the efforts of a team they’ve come to cherish.

A 3-0 defeat at the hands of the hosts knocked England out, and despite being the highest ranked team left in the tournament, Mark Sampson was pleased with the way his side went about the tournament.

Meanwhile utility woman Lucy Bronze and goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain demonstrated the mixture of emotions a tournament exit at the semi-final stage can produce.

England cricketer and wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor knows a little bit about winning international tournaments, after World Cup victory against India at Lord’s in July.

And Michael Owen, who played a key role for England at World Cups in 1998 and 2002, was disappointed with the result but acknowledged the importance of the Lionesses reaching the semi-final stage.
