Rickie Fowler nearly pulled of something rather special on hole five at The Open.
It’s fair to say the third day at The Open has been a tale of the unexpected, and one thing you won’t have been expecting to see is an albatross.
We’re not talking about the large seabird of course, but a three-under-par hole – and Rickie Fowler came mightily close to achieving just that in the afternoon’s action, with an absolute beauty of a shot off the tee.
That’s about as close to a hole-in-one as you can get without actually making it – and on a 346-yard hole too.
Most wouldn’t have even attempted to go right for the green, but the 28-year-old American has that power well and truly in his locker.
In the end Fowler had to make do with an eagle, which some fans pointed out was taken on hole five – not four as The Open’s Twitter page claimed.
Elsewhere at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, Branden Grace was making history – as he became the first man ever to shoot a 62 in a major tournament.
What a day for golf.
