Dog mess that is not picked up and put into bags will be spray-painted by L'Ancresse Common rangers.

As part of a move to highlight the problem of people failing to pick up behind after their dogs, the Vale Commons Council will be launching the drive through its rangers.

A council spokesman said this was part of a plan to prevent irresponsible dog owners from allowing their pets to foul the commons.

The idea behind the blue paint is to highlight dog mess so that it can be avoided, and to flag up just how much of it there is.

‘It is part of the council’s overall strategy, which now includes extra signs and waste receptacles on the commons. The blue paint is used widely by Canal Trusts and managers of open public land in the UK, but is probably a first for Guernsey. With the help of our Rangers, we are taking steps to encourage and educate dog owners to clean up behind their pets but, in the end, and if persuasion doesn’t work, offenders can expect to be prosecuted for an offence which carries a maximum fine of £1,000.’
