John Le Messurier Martel had owned the field at the junction of Braye Road and Mares Pellees Road since 2004, when he purchased it for £26,000.

He died in August 2016, and recently his heirs have sold the site to developers Gary Munro and Simon Holland.

Mr Holland said so far they had mowed the field, and cleared the gateway, and they had big plans for the future.

‘We are in negotiation with Planning to use it for housing,’ he said.

‘We know it is zoned correctly for housing development [under the new IDP].’

He said he had already received some good pre-application advice from the planners and he hoped to submit a planning application before the end of the year. It is not yet decided how much housing could be created on the site.

The land, on which horses used to graze, was included within the outer boundary of the Bridge main centre – the boundary line runs around one edge of the field.

During the hearings into the new Island Development Plan in 2015 people living in the area were very concerned about the loss of the field.

While the field was not classed as a Housing Target Area, the plan did note that between four and nine houses could be built on the site, which had good travel and service links nearby.

Neighbours said it was an important green space in an already built-up area.
