Cyclist Sam heads a top field
SAM CULVERWELL beat off two world champions, Olympic hopefuls and a brilliant young footballer, to last night land Guernsey sport’s biggest prize.
The young cyclist was named the outstanding performer of the year in front of a big audience at the Guernsey Sports Awards in the Beau Sejour Theatre, which included the Bailiff Sir Richard Collas, Lt-Governor Sir Ian Corder and special guest star Andy Priaulx.
In the chase for the main award, Culverwell was nominated alongside bowlers Alison Merrien MBE and Lucy Beere, sailor Clementine Thompson, footballer Maya Le Tissier and athlete Cameron Chalmers.
The Richard Burton Salver for the top male performer went to Island Games gold-medal winning triathlete Josh Lewis, while the female equivalent for the Guernsey Brewery Salver was won by Maya Le Tissier.
It proved a good night for football with new Bristol City signing Alex Scott winning the top youth award and his former St Martin’s U16s team taking the junior team trophy.
