Rowlinson family complete half marathon fundraiser

LONG after the elite athletes in the Butterfield Half Marathon had crossed the finish line, entrants continued to pour into St Peter Port to complete the 13.1-mile run around the island's west coast.

Many of the runners would have been raising vital funds for local charities, none more so than the Rowlinson family.

David was diagnosed with inclusion body myositis – a rare autoimmune disease – 10 years ago and now uses a wheelchair.

He was pushed around the course by daughter Jenny and her partner Jonny Meardon, along with Ashleigh Morris from Ravenscroft, who had donated the special wheelchair. The half marathon held no fear for the runners as earlier this year they had completed the London marathon.

‘London was special,’ said Mr Rowlinson.

‘But running around our beautiful coast, seeing so many familiar faces who had come out to support us, was incredible.’

The chair is now to be donated to Guernsey Athletics for islanders to use. The run has so far raised more than £1,500 for Guernsey Neuro Concern and Paws for Support, two local charities doing amazing work supporting those in the island with physical and mental challenges.
