Charity pre-school takes 'difficult' decision to close

AN OVER-SUBSCRIBED charity pre-school is being forced to close, leaving dozens of children with no opportunity for early years education.

Daisy Chain Pre-School, which has been based at Styx for the last eight years, will close it doors for the last time on 17 July.

Parents were told of the shock move yesterday.

Five child carers will lose their jobs when it goes.

Daisy Chain Pre-School Charitable Trust trustee Karen Stockreiter said it had not been an easy decision, but the free establishment was unable to find funding to continue.

It cost £10,000 a term to cover the rent of the hall and meet insurance, staff and equipment costs.

In addition, the charity ideally needed £60,000 – two years' funding – to offer security to staff, children and parents.

Users currently pay £2 to cover transport costs to get the children to the pre-school, but Mrs Stockreiter said they could not afford to pay more to keep the facility running.

Daisy Chain offers a service to parents from across the island who could not otherwise afford to get their children to pre-school. But it does not get any funding from the States.
