Paid parking looming as minority option is backed

PAID parking could be on the cards after a number of deputies confessed that they preferred the minority report to Environment's official road transport strategy.

There was a constant barrage of criticism from deputies during yesterday's debate in the Assembly. The key complaint against the department's proposals, which include a 5p increase in fuel tax, was that they did not provide enough of a disincentive to car use.

But while many praised the minority report submitted by Deputies Yvonne Burford and Barry Brehaut for having a detailed plan of how to achieve its goals – the main enabler being the introduction of a charge for long-stay parking in Town – a number argued they would support it only because it was the best out of the two. They added, however, that it would soon come under fire when it was the only strategy left on the table.

Deputy Burford was encouraged by the debate. 'I'm feeling reasonably confident as clearly people do recognise that we need to have a road transport strategy,' she said
