Policy Council is preparing for University of the Channel Islands

CHIEF MINISTER Jonathan Le Tocq, pictured, has insisted that a lot of progress has been made on plans to create a privately-funded University of the Channel Islands in Guernsey.

He said the Policy Council had been working with the group behind the plans, Susan Jackson Associates, to help it address 'infrastructure and resource' needs, including appropriate sites and private sector funding.

The council was also addressing various areas of policy, he said, to ensure Guernsey was ready for the new university.

Deputy Le Tocq's reassurances came as former GTA University Centre chief executive Deputy Richard Conder warned of the need to introduce Guernsey's own quality assurance regime and to protect the title of 'university' by law.

The chief minister said the States had not yet considered setting up a university itself and agreed only to support and encourage a privately-funded development.
