600 primary school places still spare
MORE than 600 spare places still exist across island primary schools despite the closures of St Andrew's and St Sampson's Infants, Education has revealed.
The department has released the figure while detailing that the average class size in September will be just 23.2 – a number described as 'favourable'.
A total of 40 St Andrew's pupils will move to their new schools in September and the merger of St. Sampson's Infants with Vale Primary will also take place, creating a three-form entry primary school. The average class size in Reception will be 24 with the lowest class size being 17 at La Houguette and the highest being 28 at the Forest.
The department said the 600 available places allowed flexibility to cope with any future fluctuations in pupil numbers or changes to where they live.
'Parents of new Reception children will know where their children will be going to school in September and we are pleased that there is a pretty even distribution of children across our schools,' said Education minister Robert Sillars.
