Action being taken to reduce antibiotic threat
ATTEMPTS to control human infections in Guernsey are continuously under threat by resistance to antibiotics, the Medical Officer of Health has warned.
But Dr Stephen Bridgman, pictured, said the island was starting to take action to reduce the risk.
It comes after a new report from the World Health Organisation claimed resistance to antibiotics poses a 'major global threat' to public health.
It analysed data from 114 countries and said resistance was happening 'in every region of the world, which could lead to people dying from simple infections that have been treatable for decades'.
Antibiotic resistance was a topic Dr Bridgman looked at in his 114th Medical Officer of Health Report, where he said there had been a rapid increase in Guernsey between 2010 and 2012 in multi-drug resistant organisms.
'It is something that concerns me,' said Dr Bridgman.
