But Chief Minister Jonathan Le Tocq did not know whether the decline was an emerging trend or simply an anomaly.

At the end of March last year it was found that 62,732 people were living in the island – a drop of 0.6%.

Net migration, the sum of immigration and emigration, accounted for the majority of the fall after it totalled to -464.

While natural increase, which is defined by the number of births over the number of deaths, boosted the population by just 111. However, the report – released this morning – still projected the island's population to increase by roughly 7,000 by 2050.

It said the peak was primarily a result of the ageing of the baby boom generation, but the population was projected to level off and decline from 2055 onwards.
