Cabling to allow installation of phones into all cells is due to begin next month and David Matthews has said the prisoners would not be able to call who they wanted, but merely be given the ability to contact loved ones at a time – and duration – of their choosing.

'Right now they only have access to phones on the wings and can use those between teatime and lock up.

'The power of the family is huge and to not be able to say goodnight to kids or read them a bedtime story is difficult.

'If they are feeling isolated, or suicidal they can pick up that phone. They each get a PIN account with a menu of numbers and can only dial those.
