£1 bus fare 'nail in report's coffin'

A £1 BUS fare would be the nail in the coffin for the minority transport strategy, the States heard.

The proposal, put forward by Al Brouard, pictured, was thrown out by 28 votes to 19.

Deputy Brouard had argued that the most important thing to people was that buses turned up when they were supposed to and that there was an effective service.

A £1 fare would not make a big difference to passengers but '. . . it would make a big difference to the States by covering the cost,' he said.

Deputy Jan Kuttelwascher agreed.

But Deputy Peter Harwood said it had been proposed with ulterior motives – to make it easier for Deputy Brouard and others who did not support the minority report to throw it out.

'If we vote for this amendment we will not merely be removing a plank but you will be putting a nail in the coffin for this Assembly for the first time to have a proper road transport strategy,' he said.
