Deputy Gary Collins was crowned the victor of the annual race after two closely-fought heats.

'For the last two years it has been won by Deputy Gavin St Pier so I thought it was time for me to step up to the plate,' he said. 'I think the key was to get a good start.'

There was controversy as bookies' favourite Deputy St Pier went out in the first heat after a collision with Deputy Lester Queripel on the first chicane, trapping both against the tyre wall. It is understood the incident will be investigated by race stewards.

Fans' favourite Deputy John Gollop received one of the biggest cheers, despite finishing half a lap behind his fellow competitors.

He said the course's relocation to the other side of the bus terminus had been both a help and a hindrance. On the one hand it was shorter and a lot more flat, but at the same time, being next to the pubs meant there were a lot more hecklers.

Lions Club of Guernsey youth committee chairman Paul Allaway said there had been a slow start to the day but it soon began picking up. 'For us this is very much a community project, doing something in the community,' he said.
