'Education IS committed to pre-schoolers'

EDUCATION and teachers are in agreement – a universal pre-school entitlement is the right way forward, the Education minister has said after calls for the department to widen its focus.

Deputy Robert Sillars, pictured, was responding to criticism from youth campaigners Wayne Bulpitt and Jane St Pier that the department needed to take a holistic approach to young age provision, rather than focusing on a solitary initiative.

'There must be some confusion because certainly all of Education is absolutely committed to a child's first 1,001 days and is working closely with HSSD,' he said.

'It's very disappointing that, while Wayne Bulpitt and Jane St Pier profess not to be experts, they have not sought any views from practitioners and professionals in Guernsey.

'I've spoken to all the primary head teachers who have been in the job for many years – one said to me they had been waiting for this for 40 years – and they are all of the view that this is the right way forward.'
