Memorial design to centre on B17 bomber
A BOEING B17 bomber will be the centrepiece of the Allied Aircrew Memorial.
Revealed at a dinner attended by local dignitaries and military professionals on Saturday night, the design has the iconic bomber flanked by six escorting Spitfires.
The bomber has been chosen as the main aircraft because of the 139 allied aircrew lost in Bailiwick waters during the Second World War. Designed by Guernsey architects Create it will use local materials where possible and is designed to complement the backdrop of the airport terminal.
Lt-Governor Air Marshal Peter Walker thought the design was fantastic and it would be a fitting tribute to those who lost their lives in the pursuit of freedom.
'It looks fabulous, not only as a memorial but it will really add to the entrance of the airport. There are many visible symbols of conflict in Guernsey, from Napoleonic to war memorials. This will complement the collection of memorials and bring it full circle.'
