It will be set at 60p an hour for the spaces at the Odeon, the majority of North Beach, Havelet, La Valette, Castle Emplacement, the Salerie and St. Julian's Avenue, Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm.

And they have also backed a new duty on first registration of vehicles.

Debate resumed this morning after members two weeks ago threw out the Environment Department's majority report in favour of one by two of its members, Deputies Barry Brehaut and Yvonne Burford.

But this still had to fend off a challenge to its key funding element, paid parking.

Free buses will be introduced for a trail period, with the possibility of a 50p fare coming in from 2016 if it is not successful.

Members backed a first registration duty based on CO2 emissions and vehicle width by 23 votes to 22.

Commercial vehicles will be exempt from the width charge and the amount they pay for that duty capped at £2,000.
